SAN FRANCISCO PARK RANGERS
San Francisco Park Rangers are responsible for the safety, security, and maintenance of order within the city’s vast park system, including over 220 parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers. From Golden Gate Park to neighborhood green spaces, Rangers patrol daily to ensure these public areas remain safe, clean, and welcoming for all.
Park Rangers are assigned to specific zones but have jurisdiction across all San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department properties, including trails, historic landmarks, open spaces, and designated natural areas.
The roots of park protection in San Francisco date back to 1874, when the Golden Gate Park Patrol—also informally known as “Park Police”—was created by the San Francisco Park Commission to oversee and safeguard Golden Gate Park.
